Intro by John Doughill, chairperson of Writers in Kyoto:
“Last year WiK member and highly-rated photographer Edward Levinson gave two well-received presentations to the group in which he talked of the spiritual aspects of his artwork and gardening. Though he lives on the Boso Peninsula, where there is also a Kamogawa, he has close connections to Kyoto, as can be seen in his latest photoessay up on the WiK website. Please do take a look when you can..”

A recent new prose and poetry piece is available for reading on the “Writers in Kyoto” website of which I am a member. Title - "Winter Wonderings of Body and Mind": Some memories of Zen in Kyoto and meetings with the Japanese vagabond poet Nanao Sakaki plus two poems.
Illustrated with four of my color photos. Please have a look here.
Article Intro from John Doughill, chairperson of Writers in Kyoto:
"Up now on the website is a poetic memoir by Ed Levinson of his connections with Kyoto, and with Nanao Sakaki in particular. Much of it will resonate with readers, and I was struck by finding that Ed and Nanao had attended the same Ram Dass talk as myself many moons ago (I wondered where all those hippies had come from!). As well as some touching poems, Ed has illustrated his piece with striking photos. I'm delighted to say he will be doing a Zoom session for members in April, so this can be considered a 'teaser' for what is to come." My WIK Zoom talk is scheduled for April 17th, 11AM Japan Time (details coming later)

Meet Photographer And Memoir Writer, Edward Levinson, Author Of Whisper Of The Land
Edward Levinson was 25 years old in 1979, trying to establish his life in the post hippie-era style of back-to-the-land living in the woods of Virginia. What on earth was he thinking and feeling when he suddenly took off on a wanderlust trip to Japan, knowing almost nothing of the culture and zero of the language? He told friends and family he’d return in two months. “For someone who tries be truthful and live an honest life, that turned out to be a huge miscalculation. I never went home,” Levinson recalls.
Join Edward as he reads from his memoir, Whisper of the Land – Visions of Japan,” show his highly regarded and worldwide exhibited photographs documenting a country lifestyle transformed into art.
“Who are we to really know what awaits us on our journeys, both the outer tangible steps we take and the inner path that tries to guide those steps? The process of doing things fascinates me. But it is the inspirations gained from nature and the contemplative life that brings me joy and feeds my photographic art, all my writings, and life as a whole. Having made my home in Japan has deeply influenced all aspects of my being.” Edward says, adding that he will happily take questions on any subject from gardening to photography and writing, or tips on daily meditative attunement practices that aid inspiration.

In January we published a small booklet “Gifts to the House in the Forest” as a project to cheer people up during the pandemic. Part 1 is a short story written by an American girl inspired by Tsuruta Shizuka’s illustrations. Part 2 story is by Shizuka, fiction (based on fact), about the stray cat Chat Noir coming into the life of an older woman who lives alone.
If you desire a book, please apply through the "Contact button” on https://solohill.net.

"Whisper of the Land" Review and Commentary by Jann Williams online at Writers in Kyoto website Feb. 2021:
"Edward Levinson’s Journey of Light and Love: Reflections on ‘Whisper of the Land’ "
"Edward Levinson lives lightly on the land. Having put down roots on the Boso Peninsula in rural Japan, Edward nurtures body and soul with the productive fruit, vegetable and flower garden around his hilltop home. The serendipitous story of how he and his partner Tsuruta Shizuka came to ‘be’ at Solo Hill is lyrically told in ‘Whisper of the Land: Visions of Japan’. Reading the book over the space of a few hours, I felt deep resonance with Edward’s outlook on life; …"

My Photos with Greek Haiku
Greek poet and visual artist Ms. Maria Papatzelou has composed 8 haiku to go with 8 of my black and white pinhole photographs from the “Moments in the Light” series and book. Her lovely haiku are in English and Greek. Maria’s soft touch with the words blends effortlessly with the soft pinhole atmosphere. A most enjoyable collaboration. Thank you Maria!

Whisper of the Land” book review in "American Chamber of Commerce in Japan" (ACCJ) Journal July 2015 by Vicki Beyer. She captures the essence of the book (and me) very nicely.
"Levinson’s book cannot be called an autobiography, but neither is it philosophy per se. For me, reading it provided an interesting, entertaining, and thought provoking respite.
The essay format, each beginning with one of the author’s poems and samples of his insightful photographs, made it possible to seamlessly shift from one theme to another without any grinding of the gears." READ THE FULL REVIEW HERE

About the show: “Mind Games”
I have been using pinhole photography for artistic expression since 1993. The “Mind Games” series began in 2005 and is my first major pinhole work in color.
When I first started using the three-hole “Pinhole Blender” camera it felt like a good tool for creating stories. Usually I search for three scenes or objects that seem to go together. I look for humor, irony, and social statements when combining the three images into one photograph.
The "model" in the photo is Tim Biancalana

April 27th was Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day (WPPD). http://pinholeday.org/ I am one of the founding members of this worldwide event, which started in 2001 and still help out with PR and support in Japan. Last year, 3462 photographers from 75 countries submitted images to the online web gallery. Unfortunately I won’t be doing my usual WPPD workshop this year, but I was at my gallery exhibition (see above) in the afternoon 4/27.
Did you take a photo this year on Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day WPPD?
I didn't do a workshop this year, but enjoyed quietly taking photos in my garden in the early morning on Pinhole Day. I shot black and white film so it will be about a week before its processed and uploaded to the pinhole day web site gallery. http://pinholeday.org/ A friend and I also made some photos in the garden of the gallery now hosting my exhibition.
***If you are a former workshop student or just a "fan" of Edo Photos, please feel free to submit your Pinhole Day photo under the Group Name - [Edward Levinson- Edo Photos] . It would be really enjoyable to see everyone's photos shared together.

I had a nine page photo essay titled "Manhattan Mashup" in the well-known Japanese camera magazine "Nippon Camera" August 2013 issue. One of my photos also appeared on the cover. It was an image of a section of a giant poster of Leonard Cohen juxtaposed under the Broadway lights near Times Square. Still available as a "back number". If outside Japan you might be able to find it in a Japanese bookstore or good library. I may post some of the images on the web now that it no longer on the news stands.

On 4/20, - My long-time assistant helped people to make their own pinhole cameras in preparation for shooting on the next day.
On 4/28, I led the workshop where we took photos with pinhole cameras, and had a wet darkroom setup for developing and printing paper negative. I gave group and individual instructions so beginners and advanced were both welcome. I also be “lecturing” about technique - how to and why to - and showing examples from my own portfolio.

The above photo was taken at the Peace Park Memorial in Hiroshima on the site where the atomic bomb fell. The small statue in the sky is dedicated to the young girl Sadako, who became a symbol for peace. Sadako had leukemia from the radiation and set a goal of making1000 paper cranes believing that would make her better. She died before her wish came true, but making the paper cranes for peace become a tradition around the world. Japanese school children pay homage to her at the Peace Park.
