Spots of Light – Tokyo –
This exhibition coincides with my 40th anniversary of first coming to Japan in the fall of 1979. Featuring photographs taken in Tokyo between 2015-2019, it also looks forward to next year's "Tokyo 2020".
About the exhibition:
"Looking for photographic subjects I am always attracted to places that shine even if surrounded by shadowy darkness. It is the power of light over dark that I am seeking. Seeing and immersing myself in these spots of light is a natural process, a simple matter of feeling.
I see the struggle of nature to show its face and catch our attention and respect. Sadness creeps in watching lonely looking people immersed in their phone worlds. I encounter Japanese spiritual traditions and snippets of nostalgic old Tokyo that question its march towards modernity.
However, regardless of these challenges, I still thrive on the dynamic culture, energy, and creative impulses generated by the power of Tokyo and its light.
Light and shadow create my content, each photo has a message, and I hope shines a spotlight.
In this series photographed between 2015 and 2019, I have used a hybrid approach. I have a camera body, but no lens other than my eye. Using a pinhole mounted on a digital camera allows me the freedom to wander the streets, buildings, and parks without a tripod. The flexibility of using a high ISO when needed widens the range of what was previously possible to capture using film." Edward Levinson 2019
