Edward Levinson Photo Exhibition
"Beauty and Symbolism in the City"
About the show:
Sixty Photographs taken between 2009 and the present - Color and Monochrome
This time I am not showing pinhole works, but photos taken with a digital camera with the theme "Beauty and Symbolism in the City". However, I will ALSO be showing a new 12 minute black and white pinhole movie on a wall monitor, the premiere showing of "Tokyo Story", version 1. At the Artist Talk on Nov. 29, I will speak some about the difference between shooting pinhole and film vs. lens and digital. Artist talk is at 5pm followed by a reception. Everyone is welcome.
Artist Statement - Beauty and Symbolism in the City
I live in the countryside, but I love to visit the city. There is so much going on. Movement, lights, noise, illuminations, humans, shadows. Even nature, my anchor, shows its face here and there. I am an easily excited “photoholic”, drinking everything in with the eyes. Roaming with a small digital camera, I search for order in chaotic metropolises like Tokyo, New York, and Paris. I know beauty and symbolism can be found in the city even if it sometimes appears cold, hard, and busy.
Walking on the streets, sitting on the train, wandering museums, drinking coffee; all these produce visual short poems, a “Diary of the Eyes”, reflecting my thoughts and reactions to the surroundings. Manmade symmetrical compositions occur naturally in a variety of “frames”. Less obvious scenes, filled with odd textures and reflections, create special one-of-a-kind filter effects.
My mind and eye gravitate towards the constant streaming of images: shapes and colors, shadows lining up just so, sunlight bouncing off buildings (never repeating itself), night versus day, humor and beauty, isolated abstracts, loneliness too. My photographic game is to find and focus on these unique scenes, creating a keepsake. Each of us sees what we need to see, thus creating our own personal world. There are millions of images to be had. It is an easy game to play. All one has to do is be open and look.
