“Crossing a 70 Year Bridge”
At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 our worlds became very quiet. Most of us were forced to look at and pay attention to things we may not have noticed before. As artists, we had to find a perhaps temporary new way of viewing and creating.
Staring at my shelves of camera stuff I decided to try an old used camera I had bought 20 years ago in Hungary but had never experimented with. I had intended to convert it to a pinhole camera, but for some reason I couldn’t bring myself to remove the original lens. The camera is a very simple Bakelite camera called “Pajtas”. It was made in Hungary in the 1950’s. That makes the camera about the same age as me! During that communist era young people were encouraged to document their lives with it.
And so, I simply went around my local country neighborhood looking at ordinary things and imaging how they might look with this somewhat soft lens. As the pandemic conditions eased, I then expanded to shooting in Tokyo and other places. I found the camera had a way of making “ordinary” scenes look “special”. Unlike my pinhole cameras, this camera has a simple viewfinder. And though there are three basic f-stops, there is only one shutter speed. In other words, there is little in the way of technical settings to worry about. Just find a subject, frame through the aged foggy viewfinder, hold your breath, and squeeze the shutter. Using modern day film emulsions, I process the exposed film in my wet darkroom, followed by computer scanning, processing, and archival inkjet printing. I cross a 70-year-old bridge with a new way of looking.

2020年パンデミックの始まりの時期、われわれの世界がとても静かになりました。私たちのほとんどは、今までに余り意識していなかったことを、無理やりに見なければならなかったことに気づかなければなりませんでした。アーティストとして一時的かもしれないけれど、新しい見方と創造方法を見つけることが必要でした。
アトリエの棚のカメラと道具を見つめながら、20年前にブダペストで買った中古カメラをまだ使用していなかったので、試すことにしました。買った時、
ピンホールカメラに変換する予定でしたが、何かの理由で、そのオリジナルレンズを外す勇気が出ませんでした。1950年代にハンガリーで作られたこのカメラは、シンプルなベークライト「 パジャタ」カメラです。(ハンガリー語で「仲間」を意味する。)ということは、カメラの年齢は私と同じくらいですね！
共産主義時代、若者たちは自分たちの生活をこのカメラで記録することが奨励されたそうです。
それで気楽に、自分の今居る近所を廻って、普通のものを見て、被写体がこのソフトなレンズでどうなるかを想像しながら撮影しました。パンデミックの状況が緩和されるにつれて、少しずつ東京と他のロケ地で撮影を広げました。このカメラには「普通の」風景を「特別」に見せる力があることに気づきました。
私のピンホールカメラとは異なり、このカメラにはシンプルなファインダーが付いています。三つの基本的なF値しかなく、シャッタースピードは一つだけです。言い換えれば、技術的な設定に関して心配する必要はほとんどありません。ただ被写体を見つけ、古くて見にくいファインダーでフレミングを決めて、息を止める、シャッターを押す。現代のフィルム乳剤を使用し、自分の暗室で現像して、そのあとパソコンでスキャン、画像処理、アーカイブインクジェット印刷で仕上げる。新しい見方で70年の橋を渡ります。
